The city of Meknes is one the ancient cities of Morocco which dated back to the Almoravid period. It is located 140 km away from the capital Rabat and its Berber name means the Warrior. The city was a military base and becomes the capital during the period of Sultan Moulay Ismail which lasted between 1672-1727. During this time the city becomes very famous and prosperous.
The Sultan Moulay Ismail tried to compete with Louis XIV of France. For this reason, some people compare the old Medina to the French city of Versailles in Paris especially the huge buildings and Structures.
The city is listed by the organization UNESCO as world Heritage in 1996 which includes the old city, the market, bab Mansour, and other monuments.
